Best Friends Forever

My best friend Kiera and I met during our sophomore year of college. We live in different states and don’t see each other in person as often as we would like but keep in touch through text and video chat. She’s my found family and a sister of the heart. 

Last year, after years of ups and downs, my husband and I decided to separate. I know relationships take two, but I felt like a failure. I was embarrassed and ashamed and unable to see that I was judging myself far more than everyone else. 

Kiera surprised me by flying in for two days. Although brief, her visit made me feel seen, heard, and renewed. When I returned home from dropping her off at the airport, I found a small gift box on my dresser. Inside was a necklace with a star pendant with an exquisite lab-made diamond in the center. The note card inside said, “Never forget how bright you shine.” 

I wear my star pendant every day, and when I feel down, I press it between my fingers, take a deep breath, and think of Kiera and her kind words to center myself. 

Mother’s Day Moon

When my mom was diagnosed with lung cancer, I couldn’t bear the thought of being anywhere other than at her side. My dad was game for me spending most nights at their home to help. I have two teenage kids and an amazing husband, who are all close to my parents. They stepped up at home without me and stopped by my mom and dad’s daily to help. 

We’re a spiritual family and have always felt a connection to something bigger. We’re also ethical and environmentally conscious, so I don’t wear any precious gemstones. So Mother’s Day jewelry gifts have never been an expectation.

My education and career were my top priority, so dating fell by the wayside until I was in my 30s. Getting married wasn’t something I stressed about, and I had amazing friends who supported my career goals. They all got married before I did, and I was a maid of honor or bridesmaid for my 5 best friends.  

When I met my partner, I was excited to have my besties at my side. I wanted to give them something that we could all enjoy.
